Export to HTML (Legacy)

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to export content to HTML (Legacy) format for web-ready output in Adobe InDesign.

Exporting to HTML (Legacy) converts InDesign content into a web-compatible format. Text, images, and layout elements are translated into HTML and CSS. Style names applied to paragraphs, characters, objects, tables, and cells are preserved as corresponding CSS class names in the exported file.

Select the content to export, such as text frames, a range of text, table cells, or graphics, when exporting part of a document.

Select File > Export and select HTML (Legacy) as the file type.

Set a File name and location for the HTML document.

Select HTML (Legacy) from the Save as type option, then select Save.

Specify settings in the HTML Export Options dialog box across the General, Image, and Advanced categories.

Select OK to confirm the export to generate the HTML file.

A document with the specified name and an .html extension (such as “newsletter.html”) is created. If specified, a web images subfolder (such as “newsletter-web-images”) is saved in the same location.
