Find file paths for preferences, cache, and support files on macOS and Windows systems.
Consult these file locations when troubleshooting performance issues, resetting preferences, backing up custom settings, or migrating your InDesign configuration to a new machine.
Adobe InDesign stores preference and support files in three primary locations: the Application folder containing factory presets, the Roaming Data folder for preference files that sync across machines, and the Local Cached Data folder for large regenerable caches.
File location structure
Application folder
Located at the InDesign application installation path, this folder contains subfolders for factory presets and default support files included with the installation.
Roaming Data folder
Stores normal preference data designed to roam from machine to machine in networked or roaming profile environments. Custom settings, workspaces, and configuration files reside here.
Local Cached Data folder
Contains large data caches and temporary files that can be regenerated if deleted. This folder is designed for data you don't want to roam between machines in Windows roaming profile environments.

Reset preferences with keyboard shortcut
Delete the InDesign SaveData and InDesign Defaults files by holding these keys while InDesign launches:
- Windows: Shift + Ctrl + Alt
- macOS: Shift + Control + Option + Command
This removes customized settings and restores InDesign to factory defaults.
