View or show hidden characters

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to reveal non-printing formatting marks in your Adobe InDesign document.

Hidden characters show nonprinting formatting elements, such as spaces, tabs, and paragraph breaks, that affect layout but don’t print or export to formats like PDF or XML. They appear only in the document window and Story Editor, display in the layer color, and help troubleshoot spacing and text flow issues.

Select Type > Show Hidden Characters or press Ctrl + Alt + I (Windows) or Cmd + Option + I (macOS) to quickly toggle hidden characters on and off.

If hidden characters don't appear, turn off preview mode by selecting View > Screen Mode > Normal and then View > Overprint Preview to deselect it.
