Learn how to fit content within frames in Adobe InDesign using Object Fitting commands.
Object Fitting commands let you control how content fits within frames when the frame dimensions and the placed graphic don't match. These options let you resize the frame or the content, preserve proportions, fill the frame, or center the image to maintain a consistent layout.
Apply fitting commands to frames
Select Object > Fitting, then choose an option:
• Fill Frame Proportionally: Scales the content to fill the frame while maintaining its proportions completely.
• Fit Content Proportionally: Scales the content so the entire image fits within the frame without cropping.
• Content-Aware Fit: Automatically adjusts the image to fit the frame based on important visual elements.
• Fit Frame to Content: Resizes the frame to match the content dimensions.
• Fit Content to Frame: Stretches or compresses the content to match the frame size.
• Center Content: Moves the content to the center of the frame without resizing it.
• Clear Frame Fitting Options: Removes previously applied frame fitting settings.
Set automatic frame fitting
Select the frame, then select Object > Fitting > Frame Fitting Options.
From the Fitting drop-down menu, select how the content should respond when the frame resizes.
From the Align From option, choose a reference point to control which part of the content remains anchored during frame fitting.
Select Auto-Fit to adjust the frame when you resize.
Select OK.
Independent frame and content adjustment
Select the image or frame using the Direct Selection tool.
Drag the image to reposition the content within the frame.
Drag the frame edge to move the frame without moving the content.
Drag a corner handle to resize the content.
Hold Shift while dragging to maintain proportions.
To resize both the frame and content together, select the frame using the Selection tool, then press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) and drag a corner handle.
