App running slower than usual

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Resolve performance issues using preference resets, file optimization, and system configuration checks in Adobe InDesign.

When Adobe InDesign responds slowly or exhibits lag during typical operations, the issue typically stems from display settings, corrupted preferences, document-specific problems, or system resource constraints.

You may experience delays when switching between pages, slow scrolling through documents, extended wait times when applying text or object formatting, or general unresponsiveness during tasks that previously completed quickly. The application may also consume excessive memory or CPU resources, visible in your system's task manager or activity monitor.

Before trying the solutions below, verify these foundational elements:

  • Your system meets the minimum technical requirements for your InDesign version.
  • You're running the latest InDesign update available through Creative Cloud.
  • The slowness occurs with a specific document or affects all documents. Select File > New > Document to create a blank file.
  • Files are saved on your local internal hard drive rather than network drives, external drives, or removable media.
  • No recent system changes occurred (antivirus as antivirus, operating system, or browser updates or extensions).

Excessive memory use for page thumbnails

Disabling thumbnails in the Pages panel removes visual page previews but significantly reduces memory usage in documents with many pages.

Select Window > Pages to open the Pages panel.

Select the panel menu icon and then select Panel Options.

Deselect Show Thumbnails.

Preview image generation impacts save performance

InDesign generates preview images with every document save operation, unnecessarily increasing save times and file sizes.

Select Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (macOS).

Deselect Always Save Preview Images With Documents.

Select OK.

Select File > Save and note the speed improvement.

Live Screen Drawing settings affect screen updates

Select Edit > Preferences > Interface (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Interface (macOS).

Select Never, Immediate, or Delayed from the Live Screen Drawing drop-down menu. Delayed mode updates the display after a brief pause, while Never only redraws when you release the mouse button.

Live preflight consumes system resources

Live preflight checking runs continuously in the background, validating document elements against active preflight profiles and consuming system resources. You can run preflight manually before final output by selecting On when needed rather than keeping it active throughout the editing process.

Select Window > Output > Preflight.

In the Preflight panel, deselect On to turn off live preflight.

Alternatively, select the profile dropdown and choose a minimal profile with fewer rules.

Corrupt preferences

Corrupted preference files cause unexpected behavior and performance degradation

Select Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > General (macOS).

Select the Reset Preferences on Quit button.

Select OK in the dialog box that asks for confirmation.

Select OK to close the Preferences dialog box.

Quit InDesign and launch it again after some time.

Resetting preferences removes all custom settings, keyboard shortcuts, and workspace configurations. Document a list of your customizations before resetting, if possible.

Driver conflicts or hardware incompatibilities with GPU

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) acceleration encounters driver conflicts or hardware incompatibilities, resulting in display lag or rendering delays. Learn about GPU performance in InDesign to understand when GPU acceleration benefits your workflow.

Select InDesign > Preferences > GPU Performance.

Deselect GPU Performance to switch to CPU rendering.

Select OK and restart InDesign.

Test document performance, and if performance improves, check for graphics driver updates from your computer manufacturer.

Corrupt fonts

Corrupted font files, excessively installed fonts, or damaged font cache files slow down text rendering and menu display operations.

Quit InDesign and all Adobe applications.

Use a font management utility or your operating system's font folder to identify recently installed or suspicious fonts.

Temporarily turn off or remove non-essential fonts.

Clear the font cache using a utility like Font Book (macOS) or by restarting (Windows).

Launch InDesign and test performance.

Re-enable fonts gradually to identify problematic typefaces.

Damaged application files or incomplete updates

Damaged application files or incomplete updates can corrupt core functionality, requiring a complete removal and a fresh installation.

Download and run the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.

Select InDesign from the product list and select Clean All.

Manually remove InDesign preference folders from the following locations:

Windows:

  • C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\
  • C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\

macOS:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
  • ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign

Restart your computer.

Open Creative Cloud Desktop and reinstall InDesign from Apps.

Launch InDesign with default settings.
