Preview color separations and ink coverage

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use the Separations Preview panel in Adobe InDesign to check plates, inks, and overprinting before printing.

Previewing color separations on-screen helps identify printing issues early, saving time and avoiding reprints. The Separations Preview panel shows how process and spot colors will print, helping you verify ink limits, rich blacks, varnishes, and overprints for visible layers only. On-screen previews can’t show trapping, marks, or halftones, so confirm these with your commercial printer using physical proofs.

Before previewing, update linked images, assign correct color modes, and confirm ink coverage limits (typically 240–320%) with your printer.

Open the Separations Preview panel

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

In the View menu, choose Separations. The panel displays all process colors (CMYK) and any spot colors used in your document. Each separation appears as a separate row with an eye icon that controls visibility.

Preview individual or multiple separation plates

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

To view a single plate in black, select the separation name in the panel.

To view a plate in its assigned color instead, deselect Show Single Plates In Black from the panel menu.

To view multiple plates simultaneously, select the empty box to the left of each separation name you want to display.

To hide a visible plate, select the eye icon next to its name.

To view all process plates together, select the CMYK icon at the top of the separation list.

To quickly show or hide all separations, select and drag your pointer across the eye icon column. Use keyboard shortcuts to toggle separation visibility. Press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) while selecting a separation name to isolate that plate.

When previewing individual separations, areas containing that ink appear in black (or the ink's color if you've disabled the single-plate black view). Transparent varnishes become visible as black areas when viewed individually, helping you verify their placement.

Check ink coverage limits

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

In the Separations Preview panel, choose Ink Limit from the View menu.

Enter your printer's maximum ink coverage percentage in the field next to the View menu.

Review the document preview—areas exceeding the limit display in red shades. Dark red areas exceed the ink limit more than light red areas, while compliant areas appear in grayscale. Reduce ink density or consult your printer, and always confirm the correct ink limit for the specific press and paper.

Preview overprinting effects

The overprinting effects preview shows how transparent objects, blending modes, and objects set to overprint will appear in the final output. This helps you verify rich black areas where process black mixes with color inks for increased opacity.

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

In the Separations Preview panel, ensure View is set to Separations.

View multiple plates simultaneously to see how overprinting colors interact.

Toggle individual separations on and off to identify which inks contribute to overprinted areas.

Exit Separation Preview mode

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

Select Off from the View dropdown menu.
