Received an error when working with HEIF or HEIC files

Resolve HEIF and HEIC file errors in Adobe InDesign by installing the required Microsoft codec.

Missing required system codecs

When you place a HEIF or HEIC file in Adobe InDesign on Windows, the file may fail to import because the required Windows codec extensions are not installed. InDesign.

When you select File > Place and select a HEIF or HEIC file, InDesign displays one of these error messages:

  • Additional non-Adobe software is needed to open .heic or .heif files.
  • The file [filename].heic is in a format not supported in InDesign.
Note

Canon HEIF or HEIC Files are not supported. Use raw files from Canon cameras for the best results.

Quit InDesign.
