Convert footnotes and endnotes

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to convert footnotes and endnotes in Adobe InDesign while preserving numbering, formatting, and note content.

Convert footnotes to endnotes and vice versa while preserving reference numbers and note text. Use this feature to meet publication requirements or change citation styles without recreating notes. During conversion, InDesign updates reference markers and renumbers notes according to the selected format.

Select Type > Convert Footnote and Endnote.

Choose Footnote to Endnote or Endnote to Footnote.

From the Scope drop-down menu, select Document to convert all notes in the document, or select Selection to convert only the notes within the current text selection.

Select Convert. After conversion, reference markers are renumbered sequentially. Converting to endnotes creates a new endnote frame at the end of the document if one does not exist. Converting to footnotes removes endnote frames containing only the converted notes, and the notes appear at the bottom of their respective columns.
