Package InDesign files for output

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to gather all project assets into a single folder for handoff in Adobe InDesign.

Packaging creates a folder with your InDesign file, linked graphics, fonts, and a report for reliable output. Use it when sending files to printers or collaborators. Before packaging, run a preflight check to resolve issues like missing fonts or links.

Create and save a package

Select File > Package.

Review the preflight summary for errors indicated by the alert icon.

If problems occur, select Cancel, then go to Window > Output > Preflight to resolve issues before continuing.

Select the Package to proceed to Package Publication.

Select a location and set a folder name for your package.

Select the following as needed:

  • Copy Fonts (Except activated from Adobe Fonts): Include all required font files in the package.
  • Copy Linked Graphics: Include all placed images and illustrations.
  • Update Graphic Links In Package: Relink graphics to the package folder location.
  • Include Fonts and Links From Hidden and Non-Printing Content: Include assets from hidden or non-printing layers, if needed.
  • Include IDML: Add an InDesign Markup file for backward compatibility.
  • Include PDF(Print): Include a print-ready PDF generated with the selected preset alongside the native document.
  • Use Document Hyphenation Exceptions Only: Prevent reflow on systems with different hyphenation settings. Activate when sharing files.
  • View Report: Open the printing instructions report after packaging. Available only if Create Printing Instructions is selected.

Select Package.

Configure printing instructions

Select File > Package.

Select Create Printing Instructions in the Package dialog box to include detailed printer specifications.

In the Printing Instructions dialog box, enter contact information, project details, and any special instructions.

Set a filename for the instructions report. It appears as a text file in your package folder.

Select Continue to advance to Package Publication.

Note
  • If any warnings occur during PDF creation, the PDF is still created successfully. But a warning message is displayed.
  • In case of any error during PDF/IDML creation or packaging, a complete rollback occurs, and nothing is created.
  • The names of the created IDML and PDF files match the INDD document.
