Generate vector artwork from raster images

Last updated on Jun. 1, 2026

Learn how to use Concept to Vector to convert your raster images, like photos and sketches, into editable vector artwork, illustrations, and logos in Adobe Illustrator.

Concept to Vector lets you transform raster images into vector artwork using simple prompts. Start with a hand-drawn sketch and based on the prompt, you can generate refined vector outlines or fully colored artwork. With customized prompts, you can further add or remove elements from the original image in the generated output. You can also convert your photographs into stylized illustrations with a personalized look. Additionally, Concept to Vector lets you generate refined raster output from the image.

Try it yourself
Follow along with a sample file to learn how to generate vector graphics from raster images.

Use Concept to Vector to generate a refined vector or raster variation from your image.

Use the Selection  tool to select the image you want to vectorize.

In the Contextual Task Bar that appears, select Concept to Vector.

You can also access Concept to Vector   from the Quick Actions section in the Properties panel, the Control panel, Object > Generative > Concept to Vector, Window > Concept to Vector, and the right-click menu. Alternatively, select the Generative   icon in the toolbar, and then choose Create artwork from an image.

In the prompt field, enter your own prompt, select a sample prompt, or leave the prompt field empty.

You can enter prompts from the Contextual Task Bar, Properties panel, or the Concept to Vector panel.

Note
  • When generating without a prompt, if the input is a sketch, the output will be a cleaner, refined version of the sketch, whereas if the input is an image, the output will be a stylized version of the image.
  • Using the Line Art sample prompt generates stroke-based artwork in the output.

In the Contextual Task Bar, select GPT Image, GPT Image 1.5, Gemini 2.5 (Nano Banana)Gemini 3 (Nano Banana Pro), Gemini 3.1 (Nano Banana 2) or FLUX 2 Pro from the Partner models dropdown menu.

Use the options in Change settings to customize the required output:

  • Match Reference Image: Adjust the slider to control how closely the output follows the input image. More preserves more detail from the original image, while Less allows more stylized variations.
  • Raster Output: Enable the checkbox to generate a Raster output.

Select Generate. A variation appears as a Generative Object to the right of the original image.

You can manage the generated variation from the Properties panel or the Generation History panel. You can also apply Concept to Vector again to generated raster or vector outputs while continuing to use the original image as the reference.
