Illustrator crash due to plugin issues

Last updated on Oct 20, 2026

Learn how to resolve Adobe Illustrator crashes caused by incompatible or damaged third-party plugins.

If Adobe Illustrator crashes during startup or when you use specific features, a third-party plugin may be incompatible with your Illustrator version or installation.

Common plugins associated with crash issues include:

  • GraphicPDFDirect
  • Antidote
  • SAAICutPlot2020

Incompatible plugin version

Update the plugin to the latest version available from the plugin developer, and then restart Illustrator.

If you're unsure who developed the plugin, check the plugin documentation or installation folder for developer information.

Damaged Microsoft Visual C++ components (Windows)

Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installation:

Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Select the applicable Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable (x64).

Select Change, and then select Repair and follow the on-screen instructions.

Repeat the repair for Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable (x86).

Restart your computer, then launch Adobe Illustrator.

Damaged Illustrator preference files

Reset your Illustrator preferences and restart Illustrator.

Insufficient user account permissions

Run Illustrator using an administrator account.

Sign in to the new administrator account.

Restart Illustrator.

Note

Multiple versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable can be installed on the same system. Do not uninstall older versions as part of this troubleshooting procedure.

If Illustrator launches successfully, the original user account permissions are causing the issue.

Incompatible or corrupted plugin

Launch Illustrator in Safe Mode to identify problematic plugins.

Review the reported plugins and complete the recommended actions before enabling them again.

Corrupted plugin file

Remove the plugin using the developer's uninstall utility, if available.

If the plugin doesn't include an uninstall utility, remove it manually from the Illustrator plug-in folder:

Tip

Verify before publishing: Update the installation paths to the currently supported Illustrator <version> and confirm the folder names. Example: /Applications/Adobe Illustrator 2026/Plugins.localized

  • macOS: /Applications/Adobe Illustrator <version>/Plugins.localized
  • Windows: C:/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator <version>/Plug-ins

If Illustrator is installed in a custom location, navigate to the Illustrator installation folder instead.
