GPU features are unavailable, artwork appears jagged, or Illustrator crashes

Last updated on Oct 20, 2026

Learn how to resolve Adobe Illustrator GPU performance issues that cause crashes, jagged artwork, or GPU feature errors.

If Adobe Illustrator crashes, displays jagged artwork, or reports that GPU features are unavailable, the issue is often related to graphics drivers, Illustrator preferences, or GPU configuration.

Outdated GPU drivers

Update the graphics driver for your GPU.

Download and install the latest driver for your graphics hardware.

Restart your computer, and then Lauch Illustrator.

Most GPU-related issues are resolved after updating graphics drivers.

Corrupted Illustrator preferences

Create a new Illustrator preferences folder.

Close Illustrator.

Navigate to:

  • macOS: /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences
  • Windows: Windows + R > %appdata% > Adobe

Rename:

  • macOS: Illustrator Settings to Illustrator Settings_old
  • Windows: Adobe Illustrator Settings to Adobe Illustrator Settings_old

Relaunch Illustrator, and then check whether GPU features are working correctly.

GPU issue in a specific document

If GPU issues occur only in a specific file, the document may contain content that prevents Illustrator from rendering correctly with GPU acceleration.

Switch to CPU Preview while continuing to work on the file:

  • macOS: Press Command + E
  • Windows: Press Ctrl + E

If the issue affects only a specific document, include the file when reporting the issue to Adobe.

Incorrect GPU assignment on systems with multiple GPUs

On systems that include integrated and dedicated graphics processors, Illustrator may not be assigned to the preferred GPU.

Configure the operating system or GPU management utility to use the dedicated GPU for Illustrator, and then restart Illustrator.

Issue isn't resolved after trying all solutions?

Switch to CPU Preview so you can continue working in Illustrator, and then send details about the issue to sharewithai@adobe.com for further investigation.
