OpenType fonts can provide alternate glyphs and specialized number formatting. The available features depend on the selected font. Select an OpenType font before applying these features.

For details about available glyphs and alternate characters, explore character sets and alternate glyphs in Illustrator. For an overview of supported controls, explore the OpenType panel in Illustrator.

Apply stylistic sets to text styles

Use stylistic sets to apply groups of alternate glyphs defined by the font designer.

Select Window > Type > Character Styles or Paragraph Styles.

In the Character Styles or Paragraph Styles panel, select OpenType Features.

Select the Stylistic Sets control and select the set you want to apply.

Format numbers with figure styles

Figure styles change the appearance and spacing of numbers when the selected OpenType font supports them.

Select the numbers you want to format.

Select Window > Type > OpenType.

From the Figures menu, select Default Figure, Tabular Lining, Proportional Lining, Proportional Oldstyle, or Tabular Oldstyle.

Format fractions and ordinals

Use the Fractions feature to convert slash-separated numbers to typographic fractions, or use Ordinals to format ordinal indicators as superscripts.

Select the characters you want to format.

Select Window > Type > OpenType.

Select Fractions to format slash-separated numbers as typographic fractions, or select Ordinals to format ordinal indicators as superscripts.

Set character position

Use character-position options for superscripts, subscripts, and characters used as fraction numerators or denominators.

Select the characters you want to modify.

Select Window > Type > OpenType.

From the Position menu, select Default Position, Superscript, Subscript, Numerator, or Denominator.

Note

OpenType features vary by font. If an option is unavailable, the selected font may not support that feature.
