Fix network and removable media file issues

Last updated on Oct 20, 2026

Learn about Adobe's recommendations for working with Illustrator files stored on network drives and removable media.

Although Illustrator supports opening and saving files on network drives and removable media, Adobe recommends working with files on your local hard disk whenever possible. Network environments and removable media can cause file access issues, performance problems, or data loss.

To help avoid file access and save issues:

Copy the Illustrator file from the network drive or removable media to your local hard disk.

Open and edit the file in Illustrator.

Save your changes to the local copy.

Close the file.

Copy the updated file back to the network drive or removable media.

Working locally reduces the likelihood of issues caused by network interruptions or removable media.

Note

Illustrator doesn't support using network drives or removable media as scratch disks. Configure your scratch disk to use a local hard disk.
