Optimize your system for Illustrator

Last updated on Oct 21, 2026

Learn how to configure system settings in Adobe Illustrator to improve performance by managing fonts, startup apps, memory, and disk space.

System-level optimizations free up memory and processing resources that Illustrator needs to run smoothly. These adjustments affect your entire operating system and benefit all applications.

This article covers the operating system and hardware configuration. For Illustrator-specific settings, such as scratch disks and GPU configuration, learn how to improve Illustrator performance.

Before you begin

Make sure you have administrator access to modify system settings and the latest version of Adobe Illustrator installed. This process takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Manage fonts

Font management improves both system startup time and the performance of applications that access font libraries. Large font collections consume memory and slow down application launches.

Install only the fonts you actively use in your design work.

Remove or disable unused fonts through your operating system's font management interface.

Consider using a dedicated font management utility like Suitcase Fusion or FontExplorer to organize and activate fonts only when needed.

Tip

Keeping your active font library under 200 fonts significantly improves application launch times.

Limit Windows startup applications

Applications that launch automatically compete with Illustrator for available RAM and processing resources. Disabling unnecessary startup programs frees system resources.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Select the Startup tab to view all applications configured to launch at startup.

Right-click any application you don't need at startup and select Disable.

Restart Windows to apply the changes.

Disable third-party applications such as chat apps, cloud sync utilities, and update checkers, rather than Microsoft services.

If Illustrator performance doesn't improve:

  • Re-enable them one at a time
  • Test performance after each restart to identify problematic applications
  • Contact the application manufacturer if a specific program consistently degrades performance.

Install additional RAM

Insufficient RAM forces Illustrator to use hard disk space as virtual memory, significantly slowing performance. Illustrator processes information fastest when working entirely in RAM without accessing disk storage.

Check your current RAM amount by opening System Information (Windows) or About This Mac (macOS).

Verify your computer's maximum RAM capacity and compatible RAM types in your system documentation or manufacturer's website.

Purchase compatible RAM modules from a reputable vendor.

Shut down your computer completely and disconnect the power cable.

Install the RAM modules following your computer manufacturer's instructions.

Restart your computer and verify the new RAM appears in System Information.

Alert

Always ground yourself before handling RAM modules to prevent static discharge damage. Consult your computer manufacturer's documentation for specific installation procedures.

Optimize disk space

Disk errors, fragmentation, and slow storage devices reduce Illustrator performance when saving files, accessing linked images, or using scratch disk space.

On Windows, type chkdsk in the search bar, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator. Type chkdsk C: /f and press Enter. On macOS, open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities, select your drive, and click First Aid.

On Windows, type defrag in the search bar and open Defragment and Optimize Drives. Select your drive and click Optimize. On macOS with SSD drives, skip this step as macOS handles optimization automatically.

Save working files to internal hard drives rather than network servers or external drives for faster read and write speeds.

If you must deliver files to network storage, save the file locally first, then copy the completed file to the network location using your file manager.

Note

Modern SSDs don't require defragmentation and may experience reduced lifespan if defragmented repeatedly. Windows automatically disables defragmentation for SSDs.

Use local storage

Save working files to internal hard drives rather than network servers or external drives for faster read and write speeds. If you need to deliver files to network storage, save locally first, then copy the completed file to the network location.
