Repair damaged Adobe Illustrator documents

Last updated on Oct 21, 2026

Learn how to repair Adobe Illustrator documents that won't open with Content Recovery mode, creating a copy while leaving the original unchanged.

If an Illustrator document contains corrupted data, it may not open. Content Recovery mode recovers the document by removing damaged portions and creating a repaired copy. The original file remains unchanged.

Caution

Perform content recovery with care and at your own risk. Before you proceed, create a backup of your document.

Turn on content recovery mode

Quit Illustrator.

Navigate to the Illustrator preferences file.

  • macOS

/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator <version> Settings/<language>/Adobe Illustrator Prefs

  • Windows

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator <version> Settings\<language>\x64\Adobe Illustrator Prefs

Open the preferences file in TextEdit (macOS) or Notepad (Windows).

Look for enableContentRecovery in the following block of text:

/aiFileFormat {

/PDFCompatibility 1

enableATEReadRecovery 0

/enableContentRecovery 0

/enableATEWriteRecovery 0

/clipboardPSLevel 3

}

Change the value of enableContentRecovery from 0 to 1:

/enableContentRecovery 1

If the /aiFileFormat section does not include the enableContentRecovery line, add it.

Save the preferences file without changing the filename or extension.

If you can't find the Library folder on macOS, first make the hidden user Library folder visible.

Repair the document

Launch Illustrator, select File > Open.

Caution

Don't double-click the document, open it from the Recent Files list, or drag it onto Illustrator.

Select the document that you want to repair, but do not open it.

Press and hold Cmd + Opt + Shift (macOS) or Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows), and select Open. A blank document opens.

Close the blank document without saving it.

In the same folder that contains your document, look for its duplicate copy whose name starts with an underscore. For example, in the document MyFile.ai, you'll see its copy named_MyFile.ai.

The duplicate copy is the repaired version of your document that you can work on. To modify any text in the repaired document, you can also open the document in a text editor.
