Configure GPU performance settings

Last updated on Oct 18, 2026

Learn how to configure GPU acceleration settings to improve Adobe Illustrator's performance and display quality.

GPU settings help you balance performance with your system's capabilities, ensuring smooth drawing and editing.

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a specialized processor that accelerates graphics rendering and optimizes Illustrator performance. GPU Performance is enabled by default in Illustrator. Use these settings to adjust performance, troubleshoot display issues, or optimize Illustrator for your specific hardware.

GPU Performance Settings

Select Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Illustrator > Settings > Performance (macOS).

Review GPU Performance settings in the Performance panel.

Select or deselect these options:

GPU Performance to enable or disable GPU acceleration.

Animated Zoom to control smooth zoom animations.

Show System Info to open the System Info panel that displays Illustrator's software and hardware environment.

Real-Time Drawing and Editing to control real-time rendering behavior.

Set your preferred Undo Counts value (50, 100, or 200) from the dropdown list.

Select OK to apply your changes.

If you experience lag or visual artifacts while working in Illustrator, you can either disable GPU Performance entirely or switch to CPU-based preview rendering.

Switch between GPU and CPU preview modes

Select View > GPU Preview to enable GPU-accelerated rendering.

Select View > Preview on CPU to switch to CPU-based rendering if you experience performance issues.

Note

If Real-Time drawing and editing experiences lag, Illustrator automatically switches to non-real-time modes.

For optimization, try ways to improve Illustrator performance on Windows or macOS. If GPU issues persist, update your GPU drivers or review GPU performance troubleshooting.
