Manage native Adobe Illustrator AI file sizes

Last updated on Oct 21, 2026

Learn how to reduce native Adobe Illustrator AI file sizes by adjusting font subsetting, PDF compatibility, and compression settings.

Save options affect the size of native AI files. Select settings based on whether you need complete font embedding or PDF compatibility.

Open the Illustrator document, then select File > Save As.

In the Save As dialog box, select Adobe Illustrator (*.AI) as the file format, then select Save to open the Illustrator Options dialog box.

Adjust the font and PDF compatibility settings:

  • To subset embedded fonts, keep the default value of 100% in the Subset Embedded Fonts When Percent Of Characters Used Is Less Than field.
  • To embed complete fonts, enter 0% in that field.
  • If you only need to reopen the file in Illustrator, deselect Create PDF Compatible File to reduce file size.

Select Use Compression to reduce the file size.

Select Save to save the AI file with the selected options.

Note

The Include Linked Files option affects only the PGF portion of AI files. When Create PDF Compatible File is selected, Illustrator automatically embeds linked files in the PDF-compatible portion, regardless of the Include Linked Files setting.
