Last updated on Oct 20, 2026

Learn how to resolve slow paste performance caused by unexpected global objects in an Adobe Illustrator file.

If copying and pasting artwork within an Illustrator document or between Illustrator documents is slower than expected, the file might contain unexpected global objects, such as swatches, symbols, or brushes.

Update Illustrator to the latest version.

Download the Toggle_fixBadPluginGlobalObjectNames script.

Extract the downloaded ZIP file, if necessary.

Drag the Toggle_fixBadPluginGlobalObjectNames.jsx file into the Illustrator application window.

Confirm that the following message appears: fixBadPluginGlobalObjectNames preference has been turned ON.

Note

If you see that the fixBadPluginGlobalObjectNames preference has been turned OFF, run the script again to turn the preference back on.

Quit Illustrator.

Restart Illustrator and try pasting the artwork again.
