Paths and shapes in Illustrator

Learn how paths, anchor points, fills, and strokes work together to create and edit scalable vector artwork in Illustrator.

Paths and shapes are the foundation of vector artwork in Illustrator. A path consists of one or more straight or curved segments connected by anchor points.

Path anatomy

Paths have two structural forms: open paths with distinct start and end points, or closed paths where both ends connect to form a complete shape. Segments between anchor points define the path's structure, whether straight lines, flowing curves, or a mix of both.

Anchor point types and control handles

Anchor points determine a path's shape and direction. Corner points create sharp changes in direction, while smooth points create continuous curves using direction handles. You can convert anchor points between corner and smooth types as needed.

Shape creation tools

Shape tools create common geometric shapes such as Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, and Star. Each shape is created as an editable path that you can modify later.

Shape editing techniques

The Direct Selection tool moves anchor points, edits path segments, and adjusts direction handles. Editing these elements reshapes vector objects without affecting image quality.

Custom path tools

Illustrator provides several drawing tools for creating custom paths. The Pen tool offers precise control, the Pencil tool supports freehand drawing, and the Curvature tool simplifies the creation of smooth curves.

Visual properties: fill and stroke

Each path has two visual properties: Fill, which colors the enclosed area, and Stroke, which defines the path outline. You can adjust stroke weight, style, and appearance independently of the fill.

Complex artwork principles

Complex illustrations are built from individual paths and shapes. Understanding these basic vector components makes it easier to create, edit, and combine artwork efficiently.
