Go to File > Check Document, or Window > Check Document. You can also use this while exporting your document.
Learn how to use Check Document for missing table summaries and inconsistent terminology in Adobe InDesign (Beta).
Explore the beta app
InDesign (Beta) is available for testing and feedback. Try it now to experience new features.
Inconsistent terminology and missing table summaries often go unnoticed until after you export, when they're harder to catch and fix. Check Document reviews your document for both, right from a single panel, so you can catch them before you export instead. Run it anytime, or let it check automatically as part of your export workflow.
This feature is only available in English (International) and English (North America).
Scan your document with Check Document
Select Check Document in the panel to run the document check and view suggestions.
Select View, and select All, Copy (shows inconsistent terminology) or Accessibility (shows missing table summaries).
Review the top three flagged instances and select See more if there are additional instances. Each card groups instances of one category.
Select an instance to go to its location in the document.
Select the Rescan icon to scan the document again.
Keep terminology consistent
Check Document flags inconsistencies in formatting and terminology, such as a date written as '07/12/2026' in one place and 'July 12, 2026' in another, units switching between '10 km' and '10 kilometers,' URLs between 'www.adobe.com' and 'https://www.adobe.com,' or spelling between 'color' and 'colour.' It recommends a single format to use consistently throughout your document.
Go to File > Check Document, or Window > Check Document.
Select a card to find inconsistent format for date, time, URL, phone, etc. You’ll view the different suggestions to improve the document.
Select an option from the suggestions to apply it throughout the document, or select the close icon. Instances matching the format are grayed out and not enabled for navigation.
Add a table summary using the Check Document panel
Use the Check Document panel to review your whole document at once and find every table missing a summary.
Go to File > Check Document, or Window > Check Document.
Select an entry from the Missing Table Summary card of the Check Document panel. You’ll view the table in the document.
Select Generate to view the generated table summary.
Edit the generated text if needed or select Add. You can also select the Report icon to report inappropriate or incorrect text, or Regenerate icon to get a new suggestion.
Use Table Options to add a summary to one table at a time while you're already working on it.
Select any cell in a table, then select Table > Table Options > Summary.
Select Generate Table Summary .
Edit the generated text if needed, or select the Regenerate icon.
For Creative Cloud Pro users: Alt text is free. Scanning and rescanning the document are free. Table summary generation uses 1 credit each time you generate or regenerate. The consistency check charges 1 credit when you apply the first suggestion to a card. Every other instance in that same card is included at no extra cost.
For Creative Cloud Standard users: Alt text is charged (1 credit per image for alt text generation). Scanning and rescanning the document are free. Table summary generation uses 1 credit each time you generate or regenerate. The consistency check charges 1 credit when you apply the first suggestion to a card. Every other instance in that same card is included at no extra cost.
