Fix printer-related Illustrator crash issues

Last updated on Oct 22, 2026

Learn how to troubleshoot printer-related crashes in the Adobe Illustrator by checking ink or toner, resolving printer queue issues, and changing the default printer on Windows.

Illustrator may crash, freeze, or close unexpectedly when you select File > Print. The issue may be related to printer supplies, network communication, or an incompatible printer driver. Try the remedies below in order.

Low ink or toner interrupts printer communication

Check the printer’s ink or toner levels on its control panel or in the manufacturer’s software.

Replace any cartridges that are low or empty.

Restart the printer and your computer, then test printing.

Network printer queue errors or connection problems interrupt printing

Open your system’s printer settings and inspect the print queue.

Clear any stalled print jobs or jobs with an error status.

Restart the print service. On Windows, use the Services app. On macOS, reset the printing system in System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Test printing from another application to confirm that the printer works.

If the issue persists, connect the printer directly to your computer with a USB cable and test printing again.

If printing succeeds over USB, the network configuration may be causing the issue.

An incompatible or corrupted printer driver causes Illustrator to crash on Windows

Select Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

Select Adobe PDF, then select Manage. If Adobe PDF is unavailable, select Microsoft Print to PDF, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, or Send to OneNote.

Select Set as default.

Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer.

Restart Illustrator and test printing.

If Illustrator no longer crashes, the physical printer driver may be causing the issue. You can still print to your regular printer by selecting it manually in the print dialog.

The crash persists after printer troubleshooting
