Learn how to use Check Document to find missing alt text and table summaries, inconsistent terminology, and grammar issues in Adobe InDesign (beta).

InDesign (beta) is available for testing and feedback. Try it now to experience new features.

Missing alt text, missing table summaries, inconsistent terminology, and grammar issues often go unnoticed until after you export, when they're harder to catch and fix. Check Document reviews your document for all of them, right from a single panel, so you can catch them before you export instead. Run it anytime, or let it check automatically as part of your export workflow.

Note

This feature is only available in English (International) and English (North America).

Scan your document with Check Document

Go to File > Check Document, or Window > Check Document. You can also use this while exporting your document.

Select Start Scan in the Check Document panel to view suggestions.

In the View options, select All, Accessibility (shows missing table summaries and missing alt text), or Copy Suggestions (shows inconsistent terminology and grammar issues), to view specific categories.

Review the top three flagged instances and select See <number> more if there are additional instances. Each card groups instances of one category.

Select an instance to go to its location in the document.

Select the Rescan icon to scan the document again.

Keep terminology consistent

Check Document flags inconsistencies in formatting and terminology, such as a date written as '07/12/2026' in one place and 'July 12, 2026' in another, units switching between '10 km' and '10 kilometers,' URLs between 'www.adobe.com' and 'https://www.adobe.com,' or spelling between 'color' and 'colour.' It recommends a single format to use consistently throughout your document.

Go to File > Check Document, or Window > Check Document.

Select a card to find inconsistent format for date, time, URL, phone, etc. You’ll view the different suggestions to improve the document.

Select an option from the suggestions to apply it throughout the document, or select the close icon. Instances matching the format are grayed out and not enabled for navigation.

Repeat until all instances are resolved, or select Fix all.

Review grammar suggestions

Select the suggested correction to apply it and move to the next instance, or select the close icon to remove it. Each instance shows exactly one suggested correction.

Add alt text to images

Alt Text helps assistive technologies describe images to readers. Check Document flags images that don't yet have alt text.

Go to File > Check Document, or Window > Check Document.

Select an image from the MISSING ALT TEXT card. The document pans to the image.

Select Generate to view the generated alt text.

In the ALT TEXT dialog box, select Add to accept the suggestion or the close icon to close the panel without applying the suggestion. You can also select the Regenerate icon for a new suggestion, or edit the text directly.
