Resampling options in Photoshop

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn about different resampling options to help maintain optimal image quality when resizing.

Resampling changes an image's pixel dimensions during resizing or transformation. Use the options in the Resample menu of the Image Size dialog box to control how pixels are added or removed when resizing.

Resampling algorithms

Algorithm

Best for

Quality impact

Automatic

General use

Chooses the best method automatically, depending on whether the image is being enlarged or reduced.

Preserve Details 2.0

Enlarging images

Maintains sharp edges and fine detail with reduced artifacts and includes a Reduce Noise slider.

Preserve Details

(enlargement)

Enlarging images

Uses an earlier version of the Preserve Details 2.0 algorithm.

Bicubic Smoother

(enlargement)

Enlarging images

Creates smooth transitions with minimal jagged edges.

Bicubic Sharper

(reduction)

Reducing image size

Helps maintain sharpness when reducing size.

Bicubic (smooth gradients)

General use

Balances file size and image quality and is suitable for tonal transitions.

Nearest Neighbor (hard edges)

Pixel art or sharp-edged graphics

Produces a crisp, blocky look that preserves hard edges. Ideal when you want a classic pixelated style without blurring.

Bilinear

Simple resizing

Produces less precise results and may lead to softer images.
