Enable glyph protection

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Prevent incorrect character display when working with international fonts by activating the Glyph protection feature in Adobe Photoshop.

Glyph protection helps maintain text readability when working with documents containing fonts not installed on your system. This feature automatically selects an appropriate font when you enter non-Roman text, such as Japanese or Cyrillic, after selecting a Roman font, preventing incorrect or unreadable characters from appearing.

By default, Adobe Photoshop enables glyph protection to ensure text remains readable when working with international characters.

Select Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > Type (macOS).

Select Enable Missing Glyph Protection.

A sample document with the Preferences panel open with the Enable Missing Glyph Protection option highlighted and checked.
Check Enable Missing Glyph Protection to replace unavailable international fonts with appropriate fonts.

Select OK to apply the changes.
