Package and locate linked Smart Objects

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to store your Adobe Photoshop document and linked files in one folder to stay organized and avoid losing external links.

Package linked Smart Objects

Save your Photoshop document.

You need to save the file at least once before packaging.

Select File > Package.

Select a location to save the package.
Photoshop saves your document with all linked source, audio, and video files in one folder.

Open the new folder to review your packaged document and its source files.

Note

Photoshop first looks for linked files in their last-known relative location. If the file isn't found, it checks the last-known absolute location, a saved alias (available on macOS only), and then the same folder as the document.

Relink Smart Objects

This process helps you move, copy, or share project folders without breaking links. When you open a Photoshop document with a missing source file, Photoshop automatically opens the relink dialog box and shows the last-known absolute path.

Select Relink in the dialog box that appears.

Browse to the file’s new location.

Select Place to confirm the file.

Select OK to restore the link.

The Relink dialog box shows the missing file’s last-known path with Relink, OK, and Cancel options visible.
Restore missing links with a few quick steps.
