Backup and restore preferences

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Use backup and restore preferences to transfer settings between computers or quickly recover your setup after reinstalling Adobe Photoshop.

Save your customized Photoshop settings to prevent loss during crashes or updates by creating preference file backups.

Photoshop stores your customized settings in preference files that can be lost during crashes or updates. Creating backups of these files ensures you can quickly restore your personalized workspace, keyboard shortcuts, and other settings when needed.

Backup preferences

Close the Photoshop application completely.

Navigate to the Preferences folder location:

  • macOS: Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings
  • Windows: Users/<user name>/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop <version>/Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings

Copy the Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings folder to another location.

Label your backup with the date and Photoshop version for easy identification later.

Restore preferences from backup

Close the Photoshop application completely.

Navigate to the Preferences folder location:

  • macOS: Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings
  • Windows: Users/<user name>/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop <version>/Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings

Rename or move the current Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings folder to create a temporary backup.

Copy your previously backed-up Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings folder to this location.

Launch Photoshop to verify your restored preferences.

Note

On macOS, the user Library folder is hidden by default. To access it, hold Option while selecting the Go menu in Finder, then select Library.

Tip

Create a regular backup schedule for your preferences, especially before major updates or when you've made significant customizations to your workspace or keyboard shortcuts.
