Blend and fade filter effects

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to fade a filter’s strength or blend it with a layer using blending modes for more control.

When you apply a filter in Adobe Photoshop, you might want to reduce its intensity or creatively combine it with the original image. You can:

  • Fade the filter effect by lowering its strength with the Opacity slider.
  • Blend the filter with the layer using different blending modes such as Multiply, Screen, or Overlay.

Apply a filter to a layer.

Select Edit > Fade from the menu.

Note

The Fade command is only available immediately after applying a filter, paint stroke, or adjustment.

Adjust Opacity to fade the effect in the Fade dialog box.

Select a blending mode from the Mode dropdown to control how the filter interacts with the layer.

Select OK.
