Learn how to use the Gradient tool in Adobe Photoshop to apply a gradient fill to your images or layers.

Applying gradients creates smooth color transitions in your designs. Different gradient types and settings add depth, shading, or creative effects to layers or selections.

Follow along with a sample file to learn how to add gradient fill in a few simple steps.

Select the area where you wish to apply the gradient.

Select the Gradient tool. To find it, select and hold the Paint Bucket tool.

In the Options bar, select the gradient preview to open the gradient picker. Select a preset gradient.

Select a gradient type from the Options bar: Linear, Radial, Angular, Reflected, or Diamond.

Select the Dither checkbox for a smoother gradient with less banding.

Select the Reverse checkbox to reverse the gradient colors.

Position your cursor where you want the gradient to start, then select and drag it to where you want it to end.

Tip

Press Shift while dragging to constrain the angle to multiples of 45°.
