Monitor resolution and image display size

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how monitor resolution and image dimensions affect the size at which images appear on screen.

Monitor resolution

Monitor resolution is measured in pixels. If the resolution of the monitor matches the pixel dimensions of an image, the image will fill the screen when viewed at 100%.

Factors that determine image size on screen

The size at which an image appears depends on:

  • Pixel dimensions of the image
  • Size and resolution settings of the monitor

In Photoshop, you can adjust the onscreen magnification to comfortably work with images of any pixel dimensions, regardless of the monitor size.

Practical consideration

When preparing images for onscreen viewing, always account for the lowest monitor resolution on which your photo is likely to be displayed. This ensures that the content is visible without requiring unnecessary scrolling or resizing.
