Work with layer styles

Learn how to apply a custom layer style and save custom settings using the Layer Style dialog.

Apply or edit a custom layer style

Select a layer in the Layers panel.

Double-click the layer outside the layer name or thumbnail.

Select effect options from the Layer Style dialog box.

Select OK.

Tip

Select the layer effect   icon beside the layer name in the Layers panel to expand and view all the effects applied to the layer.

Save custom settings

Select an effect (like Bevel & Emboss) from the Layer Style dialog.

Adjust the sliders and values.

Select Make Default.

Note
  • Your custom defaults will be automatically applied the next time this dialog is opened.
  • To return to your saved custom defaults after making changes, select Reset to Default.
The Layer Style dialog box in Adobe Photoshop is displayed with the Bevel & Emboss settings enabled. The Make Default and Reset to Default buttons are highlighted at the bottom.
Select Make Default to save your current style settings as the new default and Reset to Default to revert to saved defaults.
