Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to switch back to the traditional save method in Adobe Photoshop and manage how filenames are handled when saving duplicates.

Enable legacy Save As workflow

Open the Preferences dialog box.

  • On macOS: Select Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling
  • On Windows: Select Edit > Preferences > File Handling

Select Enable legacy "Save As".

Note

On macOS, you'll see a warning message about the risk of overwriting files. Select OK to acknowledge the warning.

Select OK to apply the changes.
The Save As and Save a Copy commands will now use the legacy save dialog box available in Photoshop v22.3 and earlier.

Control filename appending when saving different versions

Open the Preferences dialog box.

  • On macOS: Select Photoshop > Preferences > File Handling
  • On Windows: Select Edit > Preferences > File Handling

Locate the Do not append "copy" to filename when saving a copy option.

  • On macOS: This option is automatically enabled when you select the Enable legacy "Save As" option. It cannot be turned off unless you deselect it.
  • On Windows: This option can be toggled independently of the Enable legacy "Save As" option.

Select OK to save your preferences.
If the Do not append "copy" to filename when saving a copy option is selected, you'll receive a warning about the potential risk of overwriting files.
