Work with OpenType SVG fonts

Learn how OpenType SVG fonts bring multiple colors and gradients to your text elements without additional styling or effects.

OpenType SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) fonts combine traditional font technology with embedded SVG artwork. This integration allows you to use colorful, graphically rich text without converting to outlines or applying complex effects. Each character can contain multiple colors, gradients, and even transparency—while remaining fully editable text.

Photoshop includes several OpenType SVG fonts:

  • Trajan Color Concept
  • EmojiOne

You can identify OpenType SVG fonts in font menus by looking for the OpenType SVG icon next to the font name.

How OpenType SVG fonts differ from standard fonts

Traditional fonts render as solid shapes with a single color. In contrast, OpenType SVG fonts:

  • Contain pre-designed color schemes and gradients.
  • Maintain their appearance regardless of background color.
  • Cannot have their internal colors modified through standard text color controls.
  • Remain fully editable as text, not outlines.Scale without loss of quality or detail.

Working with emoji fonts

Emoji fonts are the most common application of OpenType SVG technology. The EmojiOne font included with Photoshop provides access to hundreds of colorful emoji characters.

Emoji fonts offer special capabilities:

  • Composite glyphs: Some emoji can be created by combining multiple glyphs (for example, country flags).
  • Skin tone variations: Certain emoji depicting people and body parts can be modified with different skin tones.
  • Visual consistency: Emoji maintain their appearance across different platforms and applications.

When to use OpenType SVG fonts in your workflow

OpenType SVG fonts work best for:

  • Decorative headings and titles
  • Social media graphics requiring emoji
  • Projects needing colorful text without complex layer effects
  • Designs where text needs to maintain editability

These fonts are particularly valuable when you need text that stands out visually while remaining searchable, editable, and accessible.
