Set guide and grid preferences

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Customize guide colors, styles, and grid measurements to create a more efficient workspace for precise element positioning and alignment in Adobe Photoshop.

Guides in Photoshop appear as non-printing lines that float over your image, while the grid provides a consistent pattern of lines or dots for symmetrical layouts. Customizing these preferences at the document level allows you to create visual distinctions between different types of guides and improve your workflow.

Select Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid, & Slices (Windows) or Photoshop > Settings > Guides, Grid, & Slices (macOS).

Select a preset color or select Custom, to choose a color in the Color picker (guides color), and select OK.

Select a line style for guides or grid.

Enter a value and select a unit of measurement for Gridline every to set the spacing between major grid lines.

Enter a value for Subdivisions to determine how many subdivisions appear between the major grid lines.

Select OK.
