Set foreground and background colors

Learn how to set colors using the toolbar or the Eyedropper tool in Adobe Photoshop.

Set colors with the toolbar

Select the Set foreground color box in the toolbar to open the Color Picker (Foreground Color) and select a new foreground color.

Select the Set background color box in the toolbar to open the Color Picker (Background Color) and select a new background color.

Select the Switch Foreground and Background Colors in the toolbar to swap the colors.

Select the Default Foreground and Background Colors in the toolbar to restore black as the foreground color and white as the background color.

Set colors with the Eyedropper tool

Select the Eyedropper tool in the toolbar.

Select a sample size from the Sample Size menu in the Options bar:

  • Point Sample: Reads the exact value of the clicked pixel.
  • 3 by 3 Average, 5 by 5 Average, 11 by 11 Average, 31 by 31 Average, 51 by 51 Average, 101 by 101 Average: Reads the average color value within the selected pixel area.

Select a sampling option from the Sample menu in the Options bar:

  • All Layers: Sample color from all layers.
  • Current Layer: Sample color only from the active layer.
  • Current & Below: Sample color from the current layer and any layers below it.
  • All Layers no Adjustments: Sample color from all layers except adjustment layers.
  • Current & Below no Adjustments: Sample color from the current layer and layers below it, excluding adjustment layers.

To select foreground or background color, do one of the following:

  • Select a new foreground color by clicking the desired area in the image.
  • Select a new background color by holding Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and clicking the desired area in the image.
Tip

You can drag the Eyedropper tool along an area of the image and release once you get the desired color to confirm selection. The foreground or background color box will change dynamically as you drag along.
