Scale layer effects

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to adjust the size of layer effects like shadows, glows, and bevels proportionally to maintain visual balance in Adobe Photoshop.

When you resize layers with effects applied, the effects may appear disproportionate to the new layer size. Photoshop allows you to scale these effects to maintain visual harmony in your design.

Layer effects are linked to layer contents and automatically update when you edit the layer. However, when you transform or resize a layer, the effects don't automatically scale with it. The Scale effect solves this problem by proportionally adjusting all effects in a layer style.

Select any layer with the effects you want to scale in the Layers panel.

Double-click the Add a layer style icon next to the layer name to open the Layer Style dialog.

Drag the Scale slider to adjust the scale percentage of all effects simultaneously..

Select OK.

Tip

When working with text layers, consider converting the text to a Smart Object before scaling. This preserves text quality while allowing you to scale both the text and its effects together.
