Tools to fine-tune sampling and fill areas

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to refine sampling and selection areas using the Sampling Brush, Lasso, and navigation tools in the Content-Aware Fill workspace in Adobe Photoshop.

The Content-Aware Fill workspace lets you refine which parts of an image are used for filling a selection. Use the Sampling Brush tool to add or remove areas, adjust the selection with refinement tools, and navigate easily with the Hand and Zoom tools.

Sampling Brush Tool

The Sampling Brush tool controls which image areas are included or excluded from the fill.

  • Add to overlay area ICON mode from the Options bar to include brushed areas in the sampling overlay.
  • Subtract from overlay area ICON mode from the Options bar removes brushed areas from the overlay.
  • Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) temporarily switches between Add and Subtract while brushing.
  • The brush Size can also be adjusted in the Options bar.

Selection refinement tools

The Lasso tool and Polygonal Lasso tool help refine the original fill area.

  • Pressing E cycles through selection modes, Add or Subtract.
  • The Expand and Contract options in the Options bar adjust the selection by a set number of pixels.
  • The Reset ICON in the Options bar restores the original selection.
Note

When the selection changes, the sampling area resets, but previous brush strokes remain applied. The selection also updates in the document after you commit the fill by selecting OK.

Navigation tools

Navigation tools adjust how you view the document and the Preview panel.

  • The Hand tool pans across the image. Holding the Spacebar temporarily switches to the Hand tool while another tool is active.
  • The Zoom tool enlarges or reduces the image view. Magnification can also be adjusted with the zoom slider in the Preview panel or by entering a percentage value.
