Create text selection borders

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to create text-shaped selections that can be manipulated like any standard selection in Adobe Photoshop.

Text selection borders allow you to create selections in the shape of text characters. You can move, copy, fill them with color, or add a stroke outline. Unlike regular type layers that remain editable, type selection borders create selection outlines on your image layer. You can use these to create text effects that interact directly with the pixels of your image, rather than floating over it as a separate layer.

Select the layer on which you want to add the type selection border. For best results, use a normal image layer, not a type layer. If you plan to fill or stroke the selection, consider creating it on a new blank layer.

Select the Horizontal Type Mask tool or the Vertical Type Mask tool from the toolbar.

Select the image where you want to place the text. A red mask overlay will appear as you type.

Type your text and adjust the font, size, and other text attributes in the Options bar (Window > Options) as needed.

Select Commit icon from the Options bar. A selection border in the shape of your text appears on the active layer.
