Set up and manage scratch disks

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Configure scratch disks, free up space, and optimize storage settings in Adobe Photoshop to resolve startup failures and performance issues.

When Photoshop crashes during startup or while working on projects, the issue is often related to insufficient scratch disk space. Scratch disks are hard drives or SSDs that Photoshop uses for temporary storage when your computer's RAM is insufficient for the current operations.

Select Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks (Windows) or Photoshop > Settings > Scratch Disks (macOS)

Select additional drives to use as scratch disks in the Scratch Disk Preferences dialog.

Use the arrow buttons to arrange drives in order of priority (fastest drives should be first).

Select OK.
