Create a new layer when brushing

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to automatically add a new pixel layer when you paint with the Brush or Pencil tool in Adobe Photoshop.

Select Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > General (macOS).

Locate and check the box next to Create a new layer when brushing.

Select OK to save your preferences.

Select the Brush tool and begin painting.

Note

When you turn on this option, Photoshop creates a new pixel layer if you paint on a non-paintable layer, such as a Smart Object or adjustment layer.
