Sharpen image using edge mask

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to sharpen an image in Adobe Photoshop using an edge mask created with the High Pass filter for controlled, selective sharpening.

Edge masks are ideal for sharpening only the outlines of objects while keeping smooth areas like skies or skin free of artifacts.

Duplicate your image layer by pressing Ctrl + J (Windows) or Command + J (macOS).

Select the duplicated layer and then select Filter > Other > High Pass.

In the High Pass dialog, set a radius between 1-3 pixels and select OK.

Change the layer blend mode to Overlay in the Layers panel to create your edge mask.

Select the Layer masks icon from the Layers panel.

Select the layer mask, then choose Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur with a small radius of 0.5-1.0 pixels to soften the edge transitions.

Use a black brush on the layer mask to paint over areas where you don't want sharpening applied.

Adjust the layer Opacity to control the overall intensity of the sharpening effect.
