Convert layer styles to image layers

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to transform layer styles into regular image layers to customize effects or apply additional editing techniques in Adobe Photoshop.

Convert layer styles to image layers to customize or fine-tune the appearance of effects by treating them as regular layers. This technique is useful when you want to apply additional filters, paint directly on an effect, or modify effects in ways not possible through the Layer Style dialog.

Select the layer containing the layer style you want to convert in the Layers panel.

Select Layer > Layer Style > Create Layers. Photoshop converts each effect into a separate layer, grouped with the original layer. You can now edit these new layers just like any regular image layer.

Note

Once you convert layer styles to image layers, the effects are no longer linked to the original layer content. If you edit the original layer, the effect layers won't automatically update as they would with layer styles.
