Remove layer effects

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to use various techniques to remove individual effects or all layer styles from selected layers without affecting the underlying content in Adobe Photoshop.

Layer effects remain linked to layer contents, automatically updating when you modify the layer. This non-destructive approach makes it easy to experiment with different styles while preserving your original work. When you no longer need these effects, you can remove them individually or all at once without affecting the underlying content.

Remove individual layer effects

Select the layer with effects you want to remove in the Layers panel.

Select the arrow next to the Indicates layer effects icon to expand and view all applied effects.

Right-click the specific effect you want to remove and select Clear Layer Style.

Remove all layer effects at once

Select the layer with effects you want to remove in the Layers panel.

Select Layer > Layer Style > Clear Layer Style from the main menu.

Temporarily hide layer effects

Select the layer with effects you want to remove in the Layers panel.

Select the visibility icon next to the Effects section for your layer.

Remove effects from multiple layers

Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and select multiple layers with effects.

Right-click any of the selected layers and select Clear Layer Style.
