Create guides

Position elements precisely using nonprinting guide lines and grids that help align objects and create symmetrical layouts in Adobe Photoshop.

Guides in Photoshop help you position elements precisely in your design. They appear as nonprinting lines that float over your image, making it easier to align objects and create balanced layouts.

Unlike the grid, which displays a fixed pattern across your entire canvas, guides can be placed exactly where you need them. Guides can be horizontal or vertical, and you can create as many as you need for your project.

Create guides from the horizontal or vertical ruler

Select View > Rulers.

Select anywhere in the horizontal or vertical ruler and drag into the image, to create a horizontal or vertical guide.

Hold Shift while dragging to snap the guide to the ruler ticks.

Create guides from the View menu

Select View > Guides > New Guide.

Select the Orientation and Color, and enter a Position value in the New guide dialog.

Select OK.
