Define an image as a preset pattern

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to define a selected area of an image as a reusable pattern in Adobe Photoshop.

Select an area using the Rectangular Marquee tool with Feather set to zero pixels in the Options bar.

Select Edit > Define Pattern to create a new pattern from the selected area.

Enter a new pattern name in the Name text field and select OK.

Note

If you define and apply a pattern from one image to another, Adobe Photoshop automatically converts the pattern’s color mode to match the destination image.
