Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to customize the appearance of transparent areas in Adobe Photoshop by changing the checkerboard display settings.

Select Photoshop > Preferences > Transparency & Gamut (macOS) or Edit > Preferences > Transparency & Gamut (Windows). The Preferences dialog opens directly to the Transparency Settings section.

Select Grid Size and Grid Colors to customize the checkerboard pattern used to display transparent areas.

Tip

Changing the grid colors can help you distinguish transparent areas from similar-looking image content.

Select OK to apply your changes.
