Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn to use OpenType variable fonts in Adobe Photoshop for creating bold typographic effects without switching fonts, perfect for flexible and responsive designs.

OpenType variable fonts give you precise control over text thickness and spacing while keeping text fully editable. You can adjust font styles without cluttering your Layers panel.

Select the Horizontal Type tool or the Vertical Type tool from the toolbar (Window > Tools).

Select an OpenType variable font from the Options bar (Window > Options). They typically have the word Variable in their name.

Select the text you want to modify. If no text is selected, the settings apply to the new text you create.

Select the Variable font settings  icon from the Character section of the Properties panel.

Adjust Weight and Optical size using the sliders.
