Batch and droplet processing options

Understand Adobe Photoshop batch options for setting sources, destinations, and naming rules to automate the processing of multiple files.

UI Option

Description

Set

The group of actions to use.

Action

The specific action from the set that runs on the files.

Source

The location Photoshop uses to take files from (Folder, Import, Opened Files, Bridge).

Override Action "Open" Commands

Ensures Photoshop processes the selected files, not the file recorded in the action’s Open command.
Deselect this option if the action was recorded to work on an open file or needs specific files.

Include All Subfolders

Files in subdirectories of the specified folder are processed.

Suppress File Open Options Dialogs

File Open Options dialog boxes are hidden when processing camera raw files. Default or previously set settings are used.

Suppress Color Profile Warnings

Color policy messages are turned off during processing.

Errors

Defines how Photoshop handles processing errors:

  • Stop For Errors: Pauses the process until you confirm the error message.
  • Log Errors to File: Logs each error without stopping. Photoshop shows a message after processing.

Destination

The location to save the processed files:

  • None: Keeps files open without saving changes unless the action has a Save command.
  • Save and Close: Saves the files in their current location, overwriting the original files.
  • Folder: Saves the processed files to another location. Select Choose to specify the destination folder.

Override Action "Save As" Commands

Ensures Photoshop saves processed files to the folder specified in the Batch dialog box or to the original folder if you select the Save and Close option. Files can keep their original names or follow the naming rules set in the File Naming section.

File Naming

Defines file naming conventions for new folders. Combine elements from menus or text fields to create default names and adjust their order and format. At least one unique element (such as a filename, serial number, or letter) is required to avoid overwriting. The Starting Serial Number sets the first value for number fields, while serial letters always begin with A.

Starting Serial Number

The initial number used for serial number fields in filenames.

Compatibility

Ensures filenames work across Windows, macOS, and UNIX systems.

Saving files using the Batch command options typically preserves the original file format. To create a batch process that saves files in a new format, record the Save As command followed by the Close command as part of your original action. Then select Override Action "Save As" Commands for the destination when setting up the batch process.

Important notes about processing options

Override Action "Open" Commands

If the action contains an Open command that opens a saved file and you don’t select this option, Photoshop reopens the recorded file after each source file and processes only that file. This happens because the Batch command always opens the file specified in the action, so the most recently opened file is used, and none of your selected files are processed.

This option requires an action to include an Open command. It ignores only the file choice, not the other Open settings.

Override Action "Save As" Commands

If you don’t select this option and your action includes a Save As command, Photoshop saves files to the folder recorded in the action instead of the Batch destination. If the action’s Save As step specifies a filename, Photoshop overwrites that same file every time it processes an image.

To use this option, your action must include a Save As step. Otherwise, the Batch command won’t save the files. This option ignores only the filename and folder from the Save As command, not other settings.

If you want files saved with original names in the Batch folder, add a Save As step in your action, then select Override Action 'Save As' Commands and select a destination folder. If you rename files in the Batch dialog box but don’t select this option, Photoshop saves two copies, one with the new name in the Batch folder and one with the original name in the action’s folder.

Some Save options, like JPEG compression or TIFF settings, aren’t available in Batch or Droplet dialog boxes. To use them, record a Save As step with those options in your action, then select Override Action "Save As" Commands so Photoshop applies the options but saves the files in the folder you specify.
