Work with adjustment and fill layers

Create and control adjustment and fill layers for non-destructive edits, precise color refinement, and creative effects.

Create an adjustment layer

In adjustment layers, apply color and tonal corrections (like brightness, contrast, or vibrance) without permanently changing pixel data.

Select File > Open to browse and select an image.

In the Layers panel, select Create new fill or adjustment layer and choose an option:

  • Color & Vibrance: Enhances muted colors
  • Brightness/Contrast: Lightens/darkens and increases contrast
  • Levels: Adjusts shadows, midtones, highlights
  • Curves: Finetunes tonal range with curve control
  • Exposure: Corrects exposure, offset, gamma
  • Hue/Saturation: Shifts colors, adjusts saturation
  • Color Balance: Changes overall color cast
  • Black & White: Converts to monochrome, adjusts tones
  • Photo Filter: Applies warming/cooling lens effects
  • Channel Mixer: Rebalances color channels
  • Color Lookup: Applies cinematic/creative looks
  • Selective Color: Adjusts specific color ranges
  • Invert: Reverses colors (negative effect)
  • Posterize: Reduces image to flat color levels
  • Threshold: Converts to high-contrast black and white
  • Gradient Map: Maps tones to gradient colors
  • Solid Color: Fills with a single color
  • Gradient: Fills with a smooth gradient blend
  • Pattern: Fills with a repeated design

In the Properties panel, adjust the sliders to adjust the colors, tones, or other settings.

Name the layer, set layer options, and press Enter (or Return on macOS).

Adjust color and vibrance

Adjust Temperature, Tint, Vibrance, and Saturation for balanced and natural-looking colors in your images.

Select File > Open to browse and select an image.

In the Layers panel, select Create new fill or adjustment layer and choose Color & Vibrance to adjust the colors.

In the Properties panel, adjust these sliders:

  • Temperature: Adjusts the warmth or coolness of the colors
  • Tint: Shifts colors toward green or magenta
  • Vibrance: Increases the intensity of muted colors
  • Saturation: Adjusts the overall intensity of colors

Name the layer, set layer options, and press Enter (or Return on macOS).

Create a fill layer

In fill layers, add a solid color, gradient, or pattern as editable, non-destructive content.

Select File > Open to browse and select an image.

Select Layer > New Fill Layer and choose one of these options:

  • Solid color: Fills the layer with the current foreground color
  • Gradient: Fills the layer with a gradient
  • Pattern: Fills the layer with a pattern

Name the layer, set layer options, and press Enter (or Return on macOS).
