Rasterize Smart Objects

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn what happens when you turn a Smart Object into a regular layer in Adobe Photoshop and why it makes your edits permanent.

Rasterizing changes a Smart Object into a normal layer. Once rasterized, any transforms, warps, or filters are locked in and can't be adjusted later. Consider this option when you're sure you no longer need the flexibility of a Smart Object.

Tip

Select the Smart Object and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Rasterize to convert it to a regular layer with all edits fixed in place.

Effects of rasterization

  • Converts the layer into a permanent, non-reversible state.
  • Requires source content to recreate the original layer.
  • Discards transformations or filters, which you can only reapply manually.
